Tales2Go to offer AR™ Points and ATOS™ levels to help educators select just-right titles for students

February 6, 2013- Washington D.C.- Tales2Go Inc., the leading provider of streaming audiobooks for schools – think Netflix for audio books – is pleased to announce its desktop player will now include AR™ Point and ATOS™ Levels by Accelerated Reader.  Tales2Go’s award-winning iOS app will get the same upgrade in the coming weeks.

Accelerated Reader, from Renaissance Learning, provides quantitative measures of a book title, based on a book’s average sentence length, word length, vocabulary grade level as well as the number of words it contains.  The formula is tied directly to the Common Core ELA requirements, providing educators and parents with benchmarks on individual titles, allowing them to select increasingly more sophisticated literature for their learners.  Like the state ELA standards that preceded them, the Common Core describe the skills and behaviors that great readers and writers exhibit at each grade level.

In an effort to define the rigor more clearly than past standards, the Common Core specifies that the sophistication of what students read is as important as the skills they master from grade to grade.  Moreover, the Common Core Standards detail specific listening requirements by grade.

“We are excited to include AR™ Points and ATOS™ Levels within our service,” said Tales2Go CEO William Weil.  “Accelerated Reader is a widely adopted program in K-8 schools, thereby increasing the value and relevancy of Tales2Go for our users.”  Audiobooks are a proven pathway to getting students excited about and skilled at reading, at all reading levels, promoting vocabulary, phonemic awareness and fluency among other benefits.  In fact, a recent study showed that student achievement increased measurably when a listening component was added to reading instruction, i.e. listening is a very effective way to build vocabulary since oral language precedes written language.  With just 34% of third graders reading at or above level, getting students excited about and skilled at reading has never been more important.
